Role Overview :

The Airfield Firefighter Shift Leader is responsible for directing day to day operations in the absence of the fire chief (operations, command and control). Plans, schedules & coordinates work activities with fire protection personnel. Establishes priorities, assigns work, establishes day-to day operations and assigns fire protection personnel to aircraft rescue firefighting (ARFF) vehicles. Justifies personnel, equipment and recommends policy changes to the fire chief based on the utilization of personnel and equipment.

 

 


Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $67,314.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

​The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Respond to airport and aircraft emergencies to suppress all types of fires, which may cover a full spectrum of hazards, spills, and medical emergencies. 
  • Protect all evidence indicating the probable cause of the fire. 
  • Perform all tasks requiring tactical procedures during suppression, ventilation, rapid re-supply, and rescue. 
  • Operate and maintain all fire station equipment. 
  • Oversee and monitor the ordering of administrative supplies, personal protective clothing and equipment, firefighting agents, and equipment based on regulation. 
  • Provide input and assist in determining financial planning and programming. 
  • Prepare the appropriate Department of Defense forms such as fire incident report and summary no-loss fire emergencies report. 
  • Assist management in developing policies, procedures, and directives as required and preparing organizational and functional charts. 
  • Direct and participate in proficiency drills and training classes for fire protection personnel. 
  • Direct fire protection personnel in performing inspection duties and directs fire protection personnel in maintaining mission essential firefighting equipment. 
  • Supervise and participate in state and federal training. 
  • Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development. 
  • Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees.  Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.
  • Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • ​Must be a minimum of 18 years of age. 
  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE). 
  • Must successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination. 
  • Before employment, perform a physical performance requirements assessment and initial training and conduct an annual re-assessment. 
  • Security Clearance: Firefighters must obtain and maintain a favorable National Agency Check (NAC), Common Access Card (CAC), and Restricted Area Access (Line Badge). 
  • Completion of Department of Defense aircraft fire school with International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certification in airport firefighter. 
  • The ability to maintain department databases and software. 
  • Hold and maintain a valid state driver’s license. 
  • Obtain and maintain a military driver’s license identifying assigned firefighting vehicles.
  • The ability to exercise caution to avoid loss of life, unnecessary property damage, and injury to self and other personnel.
  • The ability to wear protective clothing and safety equipment by National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500 standards.
  • Ability to delegate work set clear direction, and manage workflow. 
  • Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
